Wanyonyi, Thomas shine at inaugural Grand Slam Track event in Kingston

The first-ever Grand Slam Track event was held in Kingston, Jamaica, from April 4 to 6, 2025. Athletes from around the world gathered to compete in different track and field races, making it an exciting weekend full of performances and memorable moments.

Among the performers who stood out was Kenya’s Emmanuel Wanyonyi, whose remarkable display of versatility and endurance earned him a place in the event’s official scorecard as one of the best racers, alongside American sprint sensation Gabby Thomas.
Wanyonyi, the reigning Olympic champion in the 800 meters, stunned spectators with a masterful victory in the 1500m, clocking 3:35.18 to outpace a field packed with elite competitors.
Not content with just one medal, he returned to the track for his signature event, the 800m and delivered a spirited performance, finishing second with a time of 1:46.44, just behind Canada’s Marco Arop.
On the women’s side, Gabby Thomas of the United States dazzled in the sprint events. She stormed to victory in the 200 meters, clocking 22.62 seconds, and followed it up with a career-best 49.14 seconds in the 400 meters, where she placed second to Bahrain’s Salwa Eid Naser.
Thomas’s performances across both events earned her the Best Racer accolade in the scorecard, an honor she shared with Wanyonyi.
The Grand Slam Track, Kingston scorecard also recognised other elite athletes, Grant Fisher (USA) was awarded Best Tactics, Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone (USA) was named Most Dominant, and Salwa Eid Naser (Bahrain) clinched Best Performance for her triumph in the women’s 400m. The Best Category was awarded to the Women’s Long Sprints (200/400m).
